JAPA is a Yoruba-derived term meaning “to travel” or “emigrate,” often used to describe the wave of young Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad due to the country’s ongoing brain drain. This painting captures the essence of that struggle. A horse, standing erect, features a torso painted in two distinct styles—an element inspired by Nigeria’s coat of arms—surrounded by the Costus Spectabilis, Nigeria’s national flower. The horse symbolizes the nation’s strength, yet its vitality comes from its youth. As the economic hardships in Nigeria intensify, young people from various ethnic groups find themselves forced to “Japa”—leaving their homeland in search of a better future.
