This artwork unfolds the silent narrative of the profound hardship and losses endured by ordinary Nigerians following the abrupt decision by Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the head of the Central Bank of Nigeria, to overhaul the top three denominations of the naira bills—N1000, N500, N200. This move, ostensibly aimed at curbing election malpractices, rendered the former bills obsolete, causing significant repercussions for the populace. Nimi skillfully incorporates the likenesses of Mr. Emefiele and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who endorsed this seemingly insensitive decree, as substitutes for the original faceshe Igbo, constituting a significant portion of the southeast’s population, grapple with a history marred by discrimination in crucial political, business, and administrative spheres. Regrettably, the Igbo community is often regarded as the most detested in Nigeria. The 2023 Presidential elections further accentuated this prejudice, with reports of verbal and physical disenfranchisement, as well as outright abuse, suffered by the Igbo populace at polling units in Lagos state.

The piece draws inspiration from the ‘Isi-Agwu’ fabric, a symbolic traditional attire for the Igbo people, serving as the backdrop. Nimi strategically places the ‘Okpu Mboko’ cap at its focal point, a significant cultural emblem. Employing his spray cans with nuanced artistry, he ventures into uncharted dimensions to amplify the voice of this dynamic yet marginalized community. Despite enduring systemic marginalization, the Igbo persistently contribute to making Nigeria an economic hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through this artistic expression, Nimi highlights the historical injustices faced by the Igbo and serves as a voice against contemporary prejudices witnessed during elections. The ‘Isi-Agwu’ fabric becomes a potent metaphor, symbolizing resilience and cultural pride, while the ‘Okpu Mboko’ cap stands tall as a beacon of Igbo identity. Nimi’s art transcends mere aesthetics; it becomes a powerful tool advocating for justice, recognition, and empowerment for a community that continues to shape the economic landscape of Nigeria.
